Take Advantage of Free Preventive Care

Posted March 6, 2026

One of the best ways to avoid getting a serious illness is through preventive care. Annual physicals, cancer screenings, vaccinations, and other types of preventive care can help minimize the severity of health problems—or prevent them altogether.

Did you know that postponing preventive care can have serious repercussions? It can increase your risk of more advanced illness and early death. According to a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, more than 372,000 (over 15%) of all U.S. deaths in the year studied would have been avoided through clinically appropriate preventive care.1

The good news is that this type of care is usually free. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) ensures that people with private health insurance have access to free, recommended, evidence-based preventive care, such as cancer screenings and immunizations.

Examples of preventive care include:

  • Annual wellness exam
  • Mammogram
  • Recommended immunizations based on your age and gender
  • Screenings for:
    • Cervical cancer
    • Colorectal cancer
    • Diabetes
    • Hepatitis C
    • High blood pressure
    • High cholesterol
    • HIV
    • Prostate cancer

Take charge of your health

Getting the right preventive care can make the difference between an active, healthy life and one limited by disease. Take charge of your health and make a commitment to getting regular preventive care.
