October is National Dental Hygiene Month

Focusing on dental hygiene by taking care of your teeth and gums is one of the most important things you can do for your oral and overall health. Daily habits play a major role in helping prevent cavities and gum disease. Below are four simple ways to build good habits to keep your smile healthy.

Brush Twice a Day for Two Minutes

Research consistently shows that brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste is more effective at reducing the risk of cavities and gum problems than brushing less often. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and provides protection against tooth decay.

It’s also important to brush for the full two minutes each time. Studies have found that brushing for two minutes removes more plaque than brushing for only one minute. A simple way to think about it is spending about 30 seconds on each quarter of your mouth.

Using a soft-bristled toothbrush can help clean your teeth effectively while being gentle on your gums and enamel. Replace your toothbrush, or electric toothbrush head, about every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become worn or frayed.

Clean Between Your Teeth Every Day

Even the best toothbrush can’t reach every area between your teeth. That’s why cleaning between your teeth daily is an important part of maintaining good oral health.

Flossing helps remove food particles and plaque from areas your toothbrush may miss. Whether you floss before or after brushing, the important thing is to make it a consistent part of your oral care routine.

But flossing isn’t the only option. Interdental brushes, water flossers, and other tools can also help remove plaque and food particles from hard-to-reach areas.

The most effective method is often the one you’ll actually use every day. If traditional floss feels difficult or uncomfortable, talk with your dental professional about alternatives that fit your needs and preferences. Find a method that works for you so it can become a regular habit.

Make Smart Food and Drink Choices

Research has consistently linked higher sugar consumption with an increased risk of cavities. Sugary snacks, sweetened beverages, and frequent exposure to sugar throughout the day can give cavity-causing bacteria more opportunities to do damage. You don’t have to eliminate all treats, but it helps to:

  • Limit sugary drinks and snacks and enjoy sweets in moderation
  • Drink water throughout the day
  • Choose healthier snack options when possible

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Daily habits are important, but regular dental checkups and cleanings are also an important part of preventing and treating oral health problems. Your dentist can identify concerns early, provide professional cleanings, and recommend care based on your specific needs.

There isn’t one ideal schedule that works for everyone. Some people may benefit from more frequent visits, while others can maintain good oral health with less frequent appointments. Factors such as your oral health history, risk of cavities, and gum health all play a role. Work with your dentist to find the right schedule for you.
